Device turns smartphones into satellite communicators

All the myriad benefits of today’s smartphones amount to no more than the proverbial hill of beans if no cellphone signal is available. We’ve already seen a few solutions for off-grid connectivity — Range Networks’ open source phone service, for example — but nothing quite like SPOT Connect.
Launched just last week by Globalstar’s California-based Spot subsidiary, SPOT Connect is a satellite communicator capable of sending messages over the Globalstar satellite network from a smartphone operating system. Smartphone users begin by downloading the SPOT Connect app. Then, when they’re out of range, they pair their phone with the SPOT Connect device using Bluetooth. SPOT is currently compatible with smartphone operating systems including Android; others will be incorporated later this year. In any case, once it’s connected, the SPOT device links the smartphone to communication satellites, enabling users to send text messages, short emails and SOS messages including GPS coordinates, as well as to perform tasks like updating Facebook and Twitter. Users can create contact groups and store up to 10 predefined messages for quick reference and sending, and an on-device SOS button provides standalone emergency operation.
Winner of this year’s CES Innovations Award in Design and Engineering in the Personal Electronics category, the waterproof, 3.7-ounce system is scheduled to begin shipping this month. Wifi light bulbs monitored, managed and controlled remotely

Lighting is a significant contributor towards home and business energy costs, but for most of us, switching to more efficient bulbs is the extent of what we’ve done to save energy. Dutch NXP Semiconductors, however, recently introduced technology that connects bulbs over wifi, allowing fine-tuned control from any internet-connected device.
NXP’s GreenChip smart lighting solution offers a way to make internet-enabled, energy-efficient lighting networks a reality for businesses and consumers. Using the new technology, every light bulb can have its own unique IP address, and users can monitor, manage and control them all from any internet-enabled device. Lights can be turned on and off individually, for example, from any smartphone, tablet, PC or TV. Dozens or even hundreds of appliances can be connected through a wireless network designed for maximum energy savings, in fact, communicating information about their environment and consumption levels as well as any problems.
With versions for both CFL and LED lighting, NXP’s GreenChip solution fits the necessary electronics in an everyday light bulb; included are wireless IP connectivity, energy-efficient lighting and standby power as low as 50mW. GreenChip-enabled light bulbs will be able to operate on the same wireless sensor networks already common for energy metering, smart appliances and security systems. IEEE ratifies IEEE 802.3bf for Ethernet support of time distribution and synchronization protocols

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a professional association for the advancement of technology, announced the ratification of IEEE 802.3bf TM -2011, Ethernet support for time synchronization protocols. An amendment to the IEEE 802.3 TM Ethernet standard, IEEE 802.3bf provides the hardware support for time distribution and synchronization protocols, e.g., IEEE 1588 TM and IEEE 802.1AS TM -2011.

This amendment to the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standard paves the way for the rapid adoption of the IEEE 802.1 TM Audio/Video Bridging (AVB) protocol technologies in existing and future networks.

The IEEE 802.3bf standard, ratified May 16, 2011 and developed in close collaboration with the IEEE 802.1 Working Group, addresses the growing demand for an Ethernet physical layer (PHY) agnostic solution for the support of time distribution and synchronization protocols, while minimizing changes to existing Ethernet PHYs and maintaining the layering rules of Ethernet transport. IEEE 802.3bf-2011 provides one of the critical pieces in the overall solution of synchronization over packet networks. 

“The audio and video communities have been using Ethernet technologies for years as a high-performance, low-cost transport. IEEE 802.3bf-2011 and the IEEE 802.1 AVB protocol suite allow for precise timing across the network-a critical function for delivery of high-quality audio and video in real time. For the first time, this can be accomplished using interoperable IEEE 802 technologies, rather than many proprietary and incompatible solutions,” said Steve Carlson, chair, IEEE 802.3bf Task Force, president, High Speed Design.

Transform Your Photos Into 3-D Models

Let's face it, sitting next to your friends as they scroll through the same 40 images of their trip to Mt. Rushmore is a total snooze-fest. Feigning interest while they subject you to each smiling pose beneath George, Tom, Teddy and Abe is so boring its enough to turn you to stone.

Next week, the design software company Autodesk will release Photofly software that can turn those tedious snapshots into a three-dimensional souvenir for the mantle, preserving your friends' memories as well as your sanity. And if your snapshooting friends are cheapskates, no worries - Photofly is available free of charge.

"We can automatically generate a 3-D mesh at extreme detail from a set of photos—we're talking the kind of density captured by a laser scanner," Vice President of Autodesk Labs, Brian Mathews told Technology Review.

However, unlike a laser scanner, the equipment needed to capture the 3-D rendering doesn't cost tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. Mathews says an overlapping set of approximately 40 digital point-and-shoot photos is enough to capture a person's head and shoulders in detailed 3-D.

After downloading the software, which will be available only for Windows computers, users can upload their photos to a cloud server for processing. After downloading the results, the 3-D renderings appear as a wire-frame model of the captured scene with realistic surface color and texture. Users can then send that model to a 3-D printing service, such as ShapeWays.

According to Mathews, models produced from a set of well-taken photos will be spatially accurate to within 1 percent or less.
