10 Tips on Career Advancement

Many career experts agree that the best time to look for a new job is while you are still comfortably in your old one. If you’re starting to feel unchallenged in your present position, you may be ready for a promotion to the next level. If there aren’t many career advancement opportunities where you work, the best next job may be waiting for you elsewhere.

Nowadays, it’s up to you to take control of your professional future and make sure that you are progressing wisely down the right career path. Here are 10 proven strategies to help you get started:

1. Talk to your boss. Sit down and have a very direct and pointed conversation with your boss about your future in the company. Stress that you want your job performance to meet the company’s goals. Share your own career goals with him or her. Your boss will respect this display of confidence and maturity.
2. Ask for more. Volunteering to help out other departments or teams — or simply asking for more responsibilities — increases your value within the organization. Asking for additional work shows an interest and desire to help your department and company to succeed. It also puts a spotlight on your value to the business.
3. Volunteer for boards. If you have your career set on something beyond what you are doing in your present position, seek out opportunities to volunteer or serve on advisory boards, where you can build a reputation as someone who is passionate and dedicated to your particular industry.
4. Sharpen your people skills. Strong interpersonal skills play a crucial role in gaining the respect of your boss and coworkers; they will also attract the notice of outside influencers who might open new doors of opportunity for you. Be friendly, outgoing, and personable. Listen carefully to people, and practice being a clear and effective communicator.
5. Be innovative. Never be afraid to think outside of the box and put your business acumen to work. Stay on the lookout for creative solutions to problems that will make you — and your boss — look good.
6. Find a mentor. Develop mentoring relationships, either inside or outside the company. Recent studies have shown that four out of five promotions are influenced by a mentor higher up in the company. Mentors are also great sources of information and career guidance.
7. Sell yourself. Learn the fine art of self-promotion. If you have had major accomplishments or created successful programs, make sure people know about it — especially those in influential positions who could help you advance professionally. Let it be known that you are seeking a promotion or the next step up in your career.
8. Keep learning. A proven way to advance in your career is to be continually acquiring new knowledge. Stay on top of trends or developments in your field and make sure that your current résumé reflects those needed skills.
9. Network. Strengthen your personal network and join professional organizations, attend industry conferences, or even volunteer. The more people who are aware of your strengths and abilities, the better your chances of hearing about any new opportunities that might arise.
10. Build your reputation. In business, your reputation is the most valuable thing you own. Be known for being dependable, professional, and cooperative. Act and look the part by dressing professionally. Make a name for yourself by attending conferences, delivering speeches, or writing articles.

Smartphones as doctors

Want to learn how to interpret an electrocardiogram? Track your calories and exercise? Monitor your blood pressure? Find the nearest emergency room?
Say it with me: There's an app for that.
As of May, Apple's iTunes store featured more than 5,900 mobile medical software applications, with the list expanding every day, according to Dr. Thuc Huynh, CEO of ScrubdIN, a medical apps shopping site. Android, BlackBerry, Windows and other smartphones account for even more.
The apps are pretty popular, too: Three fitness products recently broke iTunes' top 75 apps list. And about 9 percent of adults who own a cellphone use an app to track or manage their health, according to a recent Pew Research Center study.
Some health professionals are hesitant to dive into the trend, however.
"A lot of physicians, unfortunately, don't know much about the apps that are out there," said Dr. Joseph Kim, president of Medical Communications Media Inc. "There are so many apps and so many different disease areas, that it's hard for that doctor to be able to give any kind of real helpful advice to their patient unless they're a lover of technology and this is something that they really enjoy learning about."
That holds true among some of South Hampton Roads' major health and medical organizations. Queries to Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System, Sentara Healthcare, Eastern Virginia Medical School and Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters yielded no recommendations for medical apps from outside developers.
"At this time, because we haven't evaluated and approved any, we have a policy against endorsing anything," said Greg Raver-Lampman, a CHKD spokesman.
CHKD's caution is well-taken.
Kim listed several potential pitfalls and precautions for users of mobile medical apps.
Though more and more hospitals, academic institutions and health-related companies are developing software, so are people with more questionable backgrounds, he said.
That means some apps could be dispensing bad advice. Consider that one of iTunes' most popular free apps listed in the medical category claims to give users a detailed description of their past lives.
Earlier this month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration proposed guidelines for mobile medical apps. However, they would only be for apps that are used as an accessory to an FDA-regulated medical device or to transform a mobile platform into such a device. Only a small number would be covered.
"Microsoft, Google, Apple: None of them have any kind of stringent criteria or way to really check to see whether or not this information is credible," Kim said.
On the other hand, complicated information in some apps is completely reliable, but meant for health professionals and could be misinterpreted by the man on the street with a cellphone.
For example, "Pocket Eye Exam," a smartphone app developed by University of Virginia physicians and biomedical engineering students, was designed to help health care providers diagnose vision problems.
Some of its features - such as a test for colorblindness and a standard eye chart - are easy for the average person to understand, said Dr. Ivan S. Login, a U.Va. professor of neurology who worked on the project. Another of the app's tests, which diagnoses a particular brain dysfunction based on eye motion, would be difficult to use correctly without the proper training.
"Although it could be a great icebreaker for a party, and sort of fun to use, the interpretation of it would generally be beyond the average person," Login said.
Smartphone users also should beware of anonymous developers.
Scammers can rig apps to harvest and steal personal information from cellphones, Kim said. Software to detect and protect against such problems is not yet common for smartphones, as it is for PCs.
"The danger that people don't realize is that unknown app that's on your device could be doing something that you don't want it to be doing. You may not actually know it," Kim said.
Apple will remove an app from iTunes if users report a serious problem, he said. But there's no recall message for people who already have downloaded the app.
Consumers can avoid such traps by researching an app's developer and steering clear if they can't find reliable information. They also should delete apps from their phones if they no longer use the software, Kim said.
"I don't want to suggest that everyone ought to be paranoid," he said. "I'm saying you need to be cautious."
The same goes for protecting personal medical information.
Because regular texts and emails generally aren't encrypted, their content is vulnerable if someone hijacks a message, Kim said. That makes it unwise to discuss private medical matters with doctors or anyone else using those means.
The best apps for storing health records and communicating with providers are tethered to a hospital's or health plan's electronic systems - unlike the Google Health product which will be discontinued next year, Kim said. With a health provider's system, a mobile user must access the software through a portal that adds a level of security.
Earlier this month, Express Scripts Inc. and Tricare, the government health insurance for active-duty military, their dependents and retirees, launched such a product. The Tricare Express Rx app allows beneficiaries to manage home-delivery prescriptions and find the nearest retail pharmacies in their network.
Locally, Sentara offers a mobile medical records application. Bon Secours Richmond has one, and there's one in the works for Bon Secours Hampton Roads patients.
About 1,500 people have downloaded and logged into the free Sentara MyChart iPhone app since it was introduced in March.
Dr. Meredith Rose wrote in an email that it allows him to communicate more directly with patients when they're not in his office.
"When he leaves my office, he can see an 'after visit' summary which includes the details of our visit," wrote Rose, who is affiliated with Sentara Family Medicine Physicians in Virginia Beach. "He can also confirm his medication list, allergy list, changes in medication. It's very, very helpful to patients."
The most useful medical apps help people form or continue healthy habits, particularly by tracking calories and exercise, Kim said. Often, the software extends to social media, such as Facebook, creating a community of support and accountability.
Nathalie Vandenheiligenberg has seen it work.
People trying to lose weight are more likely to keep up with a food diary on their phones than if they must write out entries and calculate calories by hand, said Vandenheiligenberg, a nurse practitioner with Chesapeake Regional Medical Center.
"It increases the chance for success," she said.

Lifelens Turns Your Smart Phone Into a Blood-Analyzing Microscope

With Lifelens, you can use a smartphone to give a blood test.  Let that sink in for a minute.

Developed by students from four different American universities, LifeLens' primary goal is to eradicate Malaria in the developing world. One of the main challenges facing aid workers is that it by the time a blood sample has reached a distant doctor for a Malaria test, environmental factors have contaminated the blood, leading to a shocking 60% error rate in diagnoses. As a result, the medicine is wasted on people who don't need it, and isn't given to patients who do.

The solution, according to Team Lifelens, is to give aid workers in the field the ability to perform blood tests themselves. With the LifeLens app and a tiny lens attachment, an aid worker with very little training could perform a finger prick blood sample, and take a picture of the blood cells at 350x zoom.  The app then utilizes edge detection to count the cells in the image, and identify any discolored cells that would suggest the presence of Malaria, ultimately resulting in an immediate diagnosis. The most amazing part: the team claims to have achieved a stunning 94.4% level of accuracy. If that weren't enough, a Lifelens diagnosis and treatment costs an average of only $0.56, vs. $3.40 using current methods.

All of the image processing takes place locally on the phone, eliminating the necessity of a data connection and making it ideal for rural areas. When cell service is available, the app can send diagnosis data to the cloud, allowing doctors to map case prevalence and severity in the surrounding area (these guys should really work with Team OneBuzz).

Though the application is specifically targeted at malaria diagnosis, the possibilities extend so much further. I mean, they turned a phone into a powerful microscope; it's absurd. The team mentioned that they're already working on sickle cell detection, and I could definitely see this becoming a low-cost option for school science classes that can't afford microscopes for the class. Currently though, the team is marketing the device to governments to deploy where it is needed most.

Based on what I've seen so far at this year's Imagine Cup, it looks like Malaria may have met its match.

WiMAX Network Survey:Guideline

In a series on how to plan a city-wide wireless WiMAX network.

Companies or cities that have decided to or are considering building and operating wireless broadband networks have several important issues to consider in terms of how to proceed. Once demographic, competitive, financial, commercial and/or residential market analysis is complete, the operator must conduct a thorough engineering site survey of the area to be served. Once that is completed, the data learned and gathered during the survey will aid in the development of a preliminary network design.

The initial spectrum for WiMAX in the US is unlicensed spectrum in the 5GHz range. Given that this spectrum is 'open to the public', it has inherent interference issues and risks which need to be studied carefully. A quality site survey can provide an invaluable insight into current or potential interference issues. As will be discussed in the WiMAX network design document, there are many effective ways to minimize interference in unlicensed WiMAX networks both from a site selection and equipment selection perspective.

The In-field Site Survey
A site survey is required, in short, because the operator wants to minimize the "unknowns" regarding the network prior to construction and the operator wants to develop a vision of "how" the network will work once it is built.

A site survey provides the necessary information for a complete WiMAX network blueprint, or design, which is needed in order to minimize hurdles and costly mistakes as the network is being built-out. A quality site survey will be precise to the last frequency, spectrum analysis, connector, nut & bolt.

There are many tools, online databases and mapping resources available that were developed specifically for wireless broadband technologies and applications. Much of the pre-survey and post-survey planning can be done with reasonable accuracy hundreds of miles away. There are "predictable" formulas that can be applied to the variables on any network rollout. But unlike copper or fiber networks, there are variables in a wireless network with which trained and experienced network engineers and administrators are quite often unfamiliar.
These wireless network variables include:
  • The impact of the fresnel zone on signal propagation
  • The difference between passive gain and powered amplification, and when use of each is appropriate
  • The orchestration of sector, space, frequency and polar diversification(s)
  • The use of a Front to Back ratio
  • How many channels are available for use and where are potential interferers located
  • The +/- 3dB rule and how it influences the link budget
  • How and why "application" must drive the hardware
  • Lastly, what to do when the light just won't come on
All these engineering variables apply to site-specific situations, scenarios and topology. Most represent only a fraction of the "issues" that will be encountered, and must be addressed during the deployment of a wireless network.
Quality wireless network engineers will have years of in-the-field experience recognizing and solving these issues. As wireless network planning is concerned, more information equals higher engineering and performance accuracy, which minimizes the total cost of network deployment. The operator's goal is to design a quality network with no surprises at the end.
Some elements of a standard RF site survey:
  • A quality site survey starts several days before the site visit by documenting tower and other attachment sites available. Once these sites have been researched and documented, they should be geo-coded on a topological map to assist in selection of best candidates once on the ground. This prep work and mapping work will also reduce the time on the ground, thus reducing the overall site survey costs.
  • Geo-code and photo-document the target locations (mounting points, cable runs, electrical closets, etc.) This allows the engineering firm to recommend what components are needed in the network, not what is generally or historically needed.

  • Perform and document multi-spectrum (900MHz, 2.4GHz, 4.9 GHz, 5.3 and 5.8GHz) activity by utilizing a spectrum analysis, as appropriate to the application. This allows engineers to work around potential frequency issues before the fact, not onsite during installation with tower rigger crews charging by the hour as they wait for the solution.
  • Spectrum analysis can be accomplished with varying degrees of precision. A scan of a frequency can be done in 10 minutes (with minimal collection of data) or in 10 hours (with considerably more data collection). It's even recommended to sweep both horizontal and vertical polarities, something most firms do not do.
  • Detect and document existing wireless networks including SSID and frequency info.
  • Verify available mounting locations/altitudes which aids in an accurate site parts list.
  • Initial verification and planning for available A/C power helping eliminate onsite power issues.
  • Verify visual LOS to target feeder tower's (potential tower bearings having already been determined pre-survey). This is a redundancy check against engineering software for potential manmade obstructions not represented in the software calculations.
  • Verify available space on recommended towers (expedites the lease process by getting it right the first time) and the type of tower utilized. This information is provided to the tower owners during the lease process, and to the tower riggers and/or equipment vendor to insure that the right kind of mounting brackets are ready before installation.
  • Deploy and evaluate a temporary test link to verify RF functionality for less than certain solutions. For all the recent science and technology, nothing works as dependably as installing and testing a system first.
  • A detailed view of the operator's current or planned backhaul location and documentation of potential hand-off requirements.
  • Identify many more location-specific issues that must be addressed and resolved in the final deployment plan.
  • Identify the general tree foliage environment and document the estimated losses needed to apply to the coverage propagation software. Inputting reasonable losses for foliage will provide a more accurate picture of the overall coverage capability.

How to Quit a job :5 steps and 2 warnings

On some level, it’s fun to quit a job. It’s fun to remind people that they don't own you. It’s fun to feel that burst of freedom as you walk out the door. But it’s no fun if you don’t quit right.

Before you quit, you need a semi-plan for what you’ll do next: You will either work or play. Pick one. You cannot pick sitting in front of the TV because it is lame and you will be sorry.

If you pick work, then get another job lined up before you quit, because getting a job while you have a job means that your company paid you to job hunt.

Before you quit you also need to make sure the job is the problem. Maybe you are the problem and you are blaming everything on the job so you don’t have to look at yourself. The Occupational Adventure offers a good way to take a look at your life to see what’s really holding you back. Do an honest assessment. If your job is not holding you back, then deal with what is, while you’re gainfully employed. Self-examination is always easier to do when you can pay your rent.

If you really do think quitting is the right decision, here’s how to tell your boss:

1. Be kind, even if you hate your boss, because your boss is not your boss anymore. She is part of your network. And some people who are jerks to work for are actually nice and fun outside of work. You don’t know until you try. So hedge your bets and be gracious on the way out, even if you don’t feel that way.

2. Make sure your boss knows that this is a good move for you. Even if you’re not sure if it’s a good move, tell your boss that it is. We all need to believe in ourselves, or else who will?

3. Put it in writing. Why are there 6000 exaples of resignation letters on the Internet? You are noy Wiston Churchill. You can write one sentence: “I’m leaving this company on [date].” If you want to tell your boss how much you hate her, see rule number one. If you want to nail your boss for illegal behavior, see a lawyer. Don’t tell the company how to fix itself. You are leaving. If they care about your input so much they can pay you as a consultant. Which they will not, because they do not care.

4. If you want a counter-offer, give your boss enough notice to come up with one before you leave. A counter-offer is much less likely to come after you’re gone.

5. Show gratitude for what your boss has done for you. A personal thank you note is a good way to leave because your boss can reread it all the time and remember only the good things about you. This will help when you call your boss for a favor – like when you need a reference.

Also, people who express gratitude are happier than those who don’t. One of the researchs say, “People who regularly practice grateful thinking reap emotional, physical and interpersonal benefits.” So find something nice to say about your boss and you’ll feel great as you walk out the door.

Savannah company releases smartphone app that can help detect melanoma

Courtesy of iTunes MelApp for iPhone is an image-based risk assessment mobile app that assists in the early detection of melanoma.

Now there’s one that can save our lives, and a Savannah-based company is behind it.
MelApp debuted this month for the iPhone. The application, designed to analyze skin lesions like freckles and moles for melanoma risk, is a product of Health Discovery Corporation, an 8-year-old company based in downtown Savannah and run by Dr. Steven Barnhill.
Melanoma is considered the most dangerous form of skin cancer.
Barnhill declined to be interviewed for this story but explained the benefits of MelApp for consumers in a news release issued upon the application’s release.
“Most consumers understand that early detection is critical with a cancer like melanoma; what they need is a reliable technology literally at their fingertips that offers immediate convenience at an affordable price,” Barnhill said. “Now they have it with MelApp,”
MelApp uses the iPhone’s camera, a database of moles and freckles licensed from John Hopkins University Medical Center and GPS technology in assessing risk. Users take a photo of a mole or freckle with the phone camera and use the $1.99 MelApp to enlarge and crop the photo.
Users then answer questions regarding the mole or freckle’s size and development and upload the information through MelApp. The software compares the file to the photos and info of skin lesions in the John Hopkins database and provides a risk assessment.
For those users the software deems at risk for cancer, MelApp can direct them to nearby physicians for a follow-up evaluation, using GPS technology included in the smartphone.
“Nothing can replace doctors or specialists when it comes to diagnosing and treating melanoma,” said Dr. Howard Zaren, who uses similar technology to the MelApp in the ‘mole mapping’ program at the St. Joseph’s/Candler Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer and Research Pavilion. “But awareness is the basis of all screening. Knowing that you can and should watch out for certain conditions so you can catch them at an early phase is important. This technology certainly has the potential to boost awareness.”
MelApp has met with instant success. Users in 40 countries have already purchased the application, and it ranks among the top-100 highest grossing apps in the health care and fitness category.
But then its popularity should come as no surprise. Melanoma kills one American every hour, according to the American Melanoma Foundation, and World Health Organization statistics show 130,000 cases are diagnosed globally each year.
Melanoma accounts for 80 percent of skin cancer deaths, St. Joseph's/Candler's Zaren said.
Health Discovery Corporation was born in September 2003 following Direct Wireless’ acquisition of the Barnhill Group.

MelApp: How it works
Users download the $1.99 application, take a photo of a mole or freckle with an iPhone camera and answer questions regarding the mole or freckle’s size and its development. Then submit the information for analysis via the application.
MelApp uses mathematical algorithms and image-based pattern recognition technology to evaluate the uploaded image against a database licensed from the John Hopkins University Medical Center and assess risk. The software will return an answer — high-risk or low-risk for melanoma — within seconds based on five parameters, including mole asymmetry and the rate at which the skin lesion developed.
The MelApp also includes

Now an app that helps you save Android phone's battery

When there are software programs running in the background and the users are not aware of it, the process sucks away battery life.

Many of us want to extend our Android smartphone's battery life but are not comfortable going into the details. For such users, an app has been launched, named PowerMax which is created by a startup - Volt Up.
"Smartphones that carry the Google Android platform can rest assured their phones will not fail them when they need them most," said Joseph Yossi Weihs, an embedded devices engineer and head of Volt Up.
"Of course we can't make the battery last forever, but in most cases we can double battery life, which can make all the difference, especially during emergencies," Joseph added.
The technology developed by Volt Up monitors and manages the radios of Android handsets including 2G/3G/4G, WiFi, FM, GPS and Bluetooth. The app puts these radios to sleep according to the needs of the users.
The app analyses the usage patterns of the Android handset, and keeps an eye on the device if the battery is being drained faster. The user is also informed about how much battery power is being saved and used.
Google is definitely aware the Android phones are facing some battery problems. When Google co-founder Larry Page was asked about the weak battery life of Android handsets, he said ideally the users should get one day's battery life and if they were not getting it, something was wrong. He suggested it was probably due to third party apps and the way the users used them.
When there are software programs running in the background and the users are not aware of it, the process sucks away battery life.
In simpler terms, the users should simply turn off applications such as the GPS whenever they can. Similarly the background sync, or Twitter app, RSS apps should not be active all the time. The problem is, these are the features which bring people to Android in the first place, so they may not want to disable these apps for more battery life, they would rather charge their battery.

Android app turns smartphone into wireless viewfinder for Contour+ camcorder

If you are the sort that is into some sort of action sport where you like to record yourself doing things like skateboarding, biking, or racing cars you may have one of the little camcorders that you can wear or mount in weird places. One of these camcorders is called the Contour+. This little camcorder can be mounted just about anywhere thanks to the small size.

The catch with such a little camcorder is that there is no LCD screen so you really can’t tell what the camera is recording. An app for the Contour+ camcorder has landed for the Android platform called Contour Connect. The app turns your smartphone into a wireless viewfinder. That means you can use the screen of your smartphone to line up your shot.
The app will also show you the remaining battery life in your camcorder and allows you to change the camera settings. The settings that can be adjusted using the app include video mode, video quality, mic, GPS, and lighting. The app is free and is on the Android Market right now.

Never Pay For Texting Again With Kakaotalk [Android & iOS]

Text messaging is a relatively new form of communications for most people, but it is also one that’s surging towards massive popularity. There are many situations where quick messages are more convenient than phone calls. The only problem is the price. On most carriers, text messaging is a bit of a racket. Each message is literally no more than a few kilobytes in size, yet the price for 500 texts per month is often $15 or more. If you have a data plan however, Kakaotalk can make sure you never pay for texts again.

Leveraging The Internet

free sms texting
Part of the reason given for the expensive pricing of text messaging is the method used to communicate them. Rather than using the mobile broadband connection available on most smartphones, text messages utilize the same cellular network used for calls. This means there’s wider coverage, but there’s also less bandwidth, and that’s used to justify (accurately or not) the high prices.
A way to side-step this is to use mobile broadband instead, and that’s exactly what Kakaotalk does. In essence it operates like an instant messenger on a computer. So long as you have an Internet connection on your phone, you have free SMS texting.

Identical To SMS – Almost

software for free texting to cellphones
What makes Kakaotalk a particularly nice solution to the problem of text messaging charges is the way it works. Although you can effectively do the same thing with other apps, such as imo.im, many of those apps give the definite “feel” of being a PC-like instant messenger with a mobile interface.

Kakaotalk, however, replicates the SMS interface on a typical smartphone. Conversations appear in the Chats tab of the interface, which appears very similar to the conversations tab of most Android SMS apps. The flow of the messages is the same, with user images appearing next to text bubbles, and the app triggers a notification sound and a message preview whenever you receive a new text.

In addition to texting, you can accomplish everything that would be provided by MMS. This includes pictures, video and audio clips. Indeed, the quality of multimedia sent via Kakaotalk will likely be higher, since MMS often cuts down the quality of media being transferred.
It’s also possible to invite multiple people to a text conversation, which I find can be handy in work situations where multiple people need to communicate, but can’t make a call because the work environment is either too quiet or too noisy.

Grocery shopping via smartphone on South Korean subways

We’ve seen numerous innovations designed to make the chore of grocery shopping less painful for consumers, with Indian AaramShop’s use of Facebook being one recent example. Hoping to raise the level of convenience for time-strapped commuters in South Korea, Home plus — the Korean branch of Tesco PLC — recently launched a series of virtual stores on subway platforms, enabling customers to make purchases using their smartphones while they wait for a train.
The virtual stores, constructed from large backlit billboards, displayed images of all the items one would expect to find in a standard Home plus shop. QR codes were then placed next to the image of each product, enabling smartphone equipped commuters to automatically add the merchandise to their virtual basket by scanning the code. The total order was then delivered to the commuter’s door once they returned home from work. During the campaign Home plus online sales increased by 130%, with over 10,000 customers trying the stores. A video below explains the premise in more detail:

New Bluetooth 4.0 Medical Devices to Hit the Shelves by December 2011

Bluetooth logoImage via Wikipedia The Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) is gradually rolling out specifications for a new generation of health-monitoring wireless devices based on the low-energy capabilities of Bluetooth 4.0.
Wireless device manufacturers are already designing prototypes of Bluetooth 4.0 health-monitoring devices, and mobile phone manufacturers will embed the updated wireless specification in new products beginning in the fourth quarter of 2011, in time for the holidays.
"It's a whole new architecture," Suke Jawanda, chief marketing officer for the Bluetooth SIG, told eWEEK. Many types of devices could not connect previously using Bluetooth because they required too much power, he noted. "A big battery pack is not going to happen with a glucose meter," Jawanda said.
Founded in 1998, the Bluetooth SIG is a nonprofit trade association governing the standards for Bluetooth wireless technology. All companies incorporating Bluetooth technology into their devices join the Bluetooth SIG, which now has 14,000 member companies.
On June 7, the Bluetooth SIG announced profiles for thermometer and heart rate monitors. Bluetooth profiles are the set of rules ratified by the Bluetooth SIG and ready to be optimized for particular tasks, such as monitoring heart rates or taking blood glucose numbers, Jawanda said.
"We have dozens and dozens of profiles that are optimized that allow certain devices to act accordingly," Jawanda said.
For the thermometer profile, companies will design a thermometer path to transmit temperature readings to a patient's mobile phone every half hour to allow a caregiver to keep track of the patient's condition.
"All of that information can be sent to an application, and in one spot they've got a panorama of their health," Jawanda said.
On July 26, the Bluetooth SIG will publish on its Website several other profiles, including Blood Pressure Profile and Search, which allows patients to measure their blood pressure, then send the readings to a mobile phone or PC using Bluetooth. Caregivers or doctors access the information in the cloud and import the data into EHRs (electronic health records). Health insurance companies can also access the data through the cloud.
"You can liberate data and turn it into information on a phone, on a PC and in the cloud," Jawanda said.
The number of Bluetooth-enabled medical devices on the market could increase from 40 million to hundreds of millions over the next few years, Jawanda said.
Heart rate, temperature and blood pressure monitors will be among the first Bluetooth 4.0 devices available, followed by weight scales, pedometers and new blood glucose meters.
Companies that make Bluetooth health-monitoring devices include A&D Medical, Nonin, 3M and Omron. The devices are sold in retail stores such as pharmacies and through health care providers.
By the end of 2012, 100 percent of smartphones will feature version 4.0, according to the Bluetooth SIG. Bluetooth 4.0 radios happen to be cheaper and smaller than their 3.0 predecessors, Jawanda noted. "It's just the way the silicon has been spun," he said.
To enable data to be transferred securely in the cloud, the Bluetooth SIG is working with the Continua Health Alliance, a nonprofit group of 230 companies in health care and technology that certifies the devices as interoperable with other tech products.
Mobile health will be the first industry to benefit from Bluetooth 4.0, followed by smart homes and fitness, according to the Bluetooth SIG.
With 72 percent of physicians in the United States using smartphones, mobile technology is a key driver of health care IT growth, according to a report by research firm RNCOS.
