The smartphone effect: 1991 vs 2011

Michael Douglas Cell Phone
There is little doubt that technology has changed things completely for western society in the last two decades. Computers are smaller and much faster. Games are graphically enhanced to resemble reality. Just about anything we would want to know that used to require a trip to the library can be found on Google or Wikipedia.
The internet might be the most profound technological advancement in the last 20 years, but cell phones in general and smart phones in particular have made the transition to a digitally-driven world much more pronounced. Do you remember what it was like when you got your first cell phone?
This infographic by our friends at the Windows Team gives us a quick look at the changes that have happened in cellular technology over the years and how it has changed the way we do… everything. Click to enlarge.

Shoes to power Smartphones

-Several years ago, Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers pioneered conversion of the energy we produce by walking, through energy-harvesting footwear. That energy is usually lost as heat.
Trouble is, footwear-embedded harvesters so far have failed to produce the wattage required to keep a cellphone or a smartphone juiced, according to Tom Krupenkin, a mechanical engineering professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Cellphones require 1 to 2 watts during phone calls, and smartphones need up to 7 watts for Internet browsing, according to Krupenkin.
Now he and a colleague last week said in the journal Nature Communications that they have developed an embedded energy harvester that can generate up to 20 watts of power.

Life-Saving Smartphone Apps (no need to get caught in a severe storm)

Concert-Goers: Sitting Ducks. In light of the tragic turn of events at the Indiana State Fair Saturday evening (straight-line winds estimated at 70 mph), the result of a "gust front", a sudden surge of rain/hail-cooled air out in advance of the heavy rain and hail. A severe storm watch was posted; anecdotal evidence that a local radio station provided a 4-5 minute warning (still researching whether the local NWS had a warning for this event - I can't believe there wasn't sufficient warning). But the truth: if you're at a fair, or concert, any outdoor venue, there is heightened risk when severe storms roll thru. You don't have to be surprised - there are some really good apps for smartphones available (a few are free) that can give you the weather intelligence you need to protect your family and yourself. I know I look like a weather geek (enthusiast!) when I'm checking my iPhone - but at least I won't get caught in a severe storm. In addition to "pull" features (being able to see the radar and which counties around you are under warnings) a few of these apps (like "My-Cast") have push alert capabilities - the app will send you an SMS message if/when a warning is issued for a favorite location - or - your current GPS location. That's powerful protection and peace of mind. Consider downloading a few apps for your phone - you'll be glad you did. (photo above courtesy of the L.A. Times, which has an update on the disaster at the Indiana State Fair here).
1). Take a portable NOAA Weather Radio. The First Alert portable NOAA Weather Radio above costs a whopping $31, and it could save your life .With a little digging you can find portable, hand-held NOAA Weather Radios that should work in rural areas, even the North Woods. Here's a good list of other portable options, thanks to Google. It's true that signal reception can be a problem, but I always camp with a portable NOAA Weather Radio. I may be a weather geek, but I want to live to tell my grandkids about my camping adventures!
2). Situational Awareness. Any good camper or outdoor enthusiast can read the sky and (on some level) know if a severe storm is brewing. High humidity, a southeast breeze, building clouds are all tip-offs that storms may be brewing. Wherever you are, hiking, camping, enjoying the outdoors, always have an "escape route" in the back of your mind. Where could you seek shelter if skies turn threatening? Under a rocky overhang, a nearby store or lodge? Any kind of building will offer some level of safety - much better than being caught outdoors. With a little planning and a Boy Scout "be prepared" mindset you can lower the risk of disaster by thinking and planning ahead.
3). Smartphone apps. This is where the real revolution is taking place in warning technology. There are some terrific apps out there for getting the time-sensitive information you need to stay ahead of the storm. They cost a few bucks, but think of it as another form of life insurance. My company, WeatherNation, offers warning solutions for major corporations, but there are some great options (that aren't in any way related to my business) that can be personalized for the locations you care about, even your real-time GPS location. They're worth every penny:

a). RadarScope. Price: $9.99 (and worth every penny). You'll agree the first time it saves your butt. In my humble opinion this is still the best pure-play radar app. It works anywhere in the USA (you can get a data signal - which can be problematic for parts of the western USA away from cell towers). Click on any NWS Doppler site and see high resolution Doppler radar, an animated loop, hail detection, velocity fields (to see if a storm is rotating and capable of generating a tornado), even storm rainfall estimates - great for determining the risk of flash flooding, which can be VERY important if you've just pitched a tent next to a babbling brook, which might be tranformed into a raging, muddy torrent if 6" of rain falls 20 miles up the road. More details from RadarScope:
"RadarScope is a specialized display utility for weather enthusiasts and meteorologists that allows you view NEXRAD Level 3 radar data along with our most requested new feature, Tornado, Severe Thunderstorm, and Flash Flood Warnings issued by the National Weather Service. It can display the latest reflectivity, velocity, and other products from any NEXRAD radar site in the United States, Guam and Puerto Rico. These aren't smoothed PNG or GIF images, this is real Level 3 radar data rendered in its original radial format for a high level of detail.

This version *now includes* support for Hawaii, Alaska, and Guam!

Whether you are scanning reflectivity for a mesocyclone's tell-tale hook echo, trying to pinpoint the landfall of a hurricane's eye wall, or looking for small features like velocity couplets in the storm relative radial velocity product, only RadarScope gives you the power to view true radial NEXRAD weather radar on your iPhone or iPod touch.

When there are any Tornado Warnings (outlined in RED), Severe Thunderstorm Warnings (YELLOW polygons), or Flash Flood Warnings (GREEN polygons) in effect throughout the US, tap the warning button in the top right corner to browse the list of current warnings, view the details, and even zoom to the selected warning on the map
".

b). My-Cast. Price: $2.99 (no, I don't get a commission). My last company (Digital Cyclone) was sold to Garmin, and they have what I still consider to be the best warning app on the planet. I'm a little biased, yes, but I've tested scores of weather apps and I still think My-Cast Weather Radar, created by Digital Cyclone, is the best overall app for getting storm warnings. You can even set it up to give you "lightning alerts" (if lightning strikes within 20 miles of your location you get an SMS alert, telling you precisely how far away it was, and what direction the strike was). More details:
"The award-winning My-Cast app delivers comprehensive yet intuitive weather information specifically for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Un-cluttered base maps display animated radar, clouds and StormWatch severe weather alerts allowing effortless interpretation of how the weather affects your day. As you check out the current weather, you may see drifting clouds or falling rain as My-Cast's distinctive weather themes come to life. Whether you are interested in weather for today, tomorrow or next week, My-Cast has you covered. When severe weather strikes, My-Cast transmits the latest alerts direct from the National Weather Service.

• Real-time, animated radar
• Weather Map with conditions, temperatures, dew points, wind direction and wind speed overlays
• Animated Visible and Infrared Clouds
• Interactive StormWatch map with National Weather Service alerts
• Complete severe weather warnings, watches, and advisory alert text
• 7-day forecast with high/low temperatures and chance of precipitation
• Hourly forecast with temps, wind speed/direction and chance of precipitation
• Forecast graph including past, present and forecast wind, dew point, temperature, and sky conditions
• Save your favorite and recently viewed locations for anywhere in the U.S.
• Shake for live data refresh
• One-button push for GPS positioning
• No ads!
"

c). Weather Radio. Price: $1. This is another app that sends out real-time warnings, only this one follows the SMS warning with a real-time stream from the local NWS office, so you can hear the latest warnings in audio form, providing another welcome level of detail. More details on Weather Radio:
"Listen to over 170 scanner radio stations providing access to NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards (NWR) broadcasts. NWR is a nationwide network of radio stations broadcasting continuous weather information. NWR broadcasts official Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Weather Radio comes with Twitter & Facebook support: tell your friends what station you're listening to, "live", without stopping your audio to invoke an external Twitter or Facebook client! Weather Radio allows users to select from NWR audio streams by State-City, or add your favorite stream."
* all 3 apps are available on iTunes. Some of these may be available for Android and Blackberry as well. It's well worth your time to look into this and download these onto your phone, set up your favorite locations (home, work, cabin, beach, etc) and see how they can give you the information you need to make smarter decisions, and keep your family out of storm-related trouble.

10 Habits that Bosses Love

Every boss wants employees who do their jobs well. But even among highly competent employees, there are distinctions. Here are 10 tips for making sure you're on the boss's A-list:

1. Communicate, communicate, communicate. Especially at the beginning of your relationship -- that is, when either you or the boss is new to the job -- err on the side of giving your boss too much information and asking too many questions.

"There's no such thing as a dumb question," says Marianne Adoradio, a Silicon Valley recruiter and career counselor. "Look at it as information gathering."

Don't keep up the constant stream of communication unless your boss likes it, though. It's best to ask directly whether you're giving the boss enough information or too much.

2. Acknowledge what the boss says. Bosses appreciate "responsive listening," says John Farner, principal of Russell Employee Management Consulting. When your boss asks you to do something or suggests ways for you to improve your work, let her know you heard.

3. Collaborate. When your boss has a new idea, respond to it in a constructive way instead of throwing up roadblocks.

"Be willing to brainstorm ways to get something done," says Michael Beasley, principal of Career-Crossings and a leadership and career development coach.

4. Build relationships. You'll make your boss look good if you establish a good rapport with your department's customers, whether they're inside the company or outside. Bring back what you learn -- about ways to offer better customer service, for example -- to your boss. This is also helpful for your own career development.

"Everybody wins in the long run," Adoradio says.

5. Understand how you fit in. Is your boss detail-oriented, or someone who keeps his head in the clouds?

"The boss's personality is just incredibly important," says Norm Meshriy, a career counselor and principal of Career Insights.

Equally important is understanding what your boss wants in an employee. It may be, for example, that a boss who is detail-oriented will expect his employees to be as well. But a boss who has no time for details may actually appreciate an employee who does.

6. Learn the boss's pet peeves. If your manager has said repeatedly that she hates being interrupted first thing in the morning, don't run to her office to give her a project update when you first get in.

7. Anticipate the boss's needs. Once you have worked with your boss for a while, you should be able to guess what information he will want before approving your purchase order, for example.

If you provide it ahead of time, "that's a gold star," Farner adds.

8. Think one level up. You still need to do your own job, of course. But when managers consider who deserves a promotion, they look for people who understand the issues that their bosses face.

9. Open yourself to new ways of doing things. When your boss comes to you with a new idea, don't simply dismiss it. If you don't think it will work, offer to discuss it further in "a mature, responsible, adult-like way," Beasley says.

10. Be engaged in your work. Arguing with your boss over every request is not a good strategy, but neither is simply shrugging your shoulders and agreeing with everything your boss says. "The manager would like to see an engaged individual," Beasley says. That means both showing enthusiasm for your work and speaking up when you see room for improvement.

Amazon honcho Bezos patents smartphone airbags to cushion falls

There have been a lot of pretty amazing materials invented in recent times that have helped make our smartphones a whole lot more resistant to abuse than they were just a few years ago. Stuff like Gorilla Glass and Tech21′s d30 protective bumpers. A new patent application has now turned up bearing the name of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos as an inventor, and it includes some pretty interesting ways to keep your smartphone intact in the event it finds itself freefalling toward an uncomfortably hard surface.
Looking a bit like something out of glorious past visions of the future, the Bezos patent covers a system that can detect how much time will pass before a device hits the ground, re-orient it using a system of gas-powered jets, and then fire an airbag prior to impact to prevent any damage from occurring. All the required hardware would be theoretically crammed into the interior of a device and ready to deploy when a fall has been detected.
It all sounds a little bit too Wile E. Coyote, but even if this is a fantastic idea, let’s hope that it gets built into protective cases and not the devices themselves. If you’ve ever had to pay to get an airbag re-installed in your vehicle, you know it’s not exactly an inexpensive proposition. The cost would almost certainly scale down for something that doesn’t need to save a life and is as comparatively small as a phone. Then again, I’ve dropped my agency-owned BlackBerry so many times I’m guessing I would have been on the hook for hundreds of dollars in airbag repairs at this point if my Curve sported the Bezos protection system.

Curl Up With a Soothing Smartphone and Relax

Unless you’re listening to “Dark Side of the Moon” on your smartphone, it’s hard to see them as devices for relaxation. More often, they’re for aggressive thumb-tapping, Angry-Birding exercises.
"Simply Being," available for Apple, Android and BlackBerry, offers guided meditation of various lengths.
Mindfulness Meditation is written and narrated by Stephan Bodian, the author of “Meditation for Dummies.”
But for every yin there is a yang. And mobile phones are no exception.
A path to a quiet mind can travel through apps dedicated to guided meditation and sleep enhancement. And fortunately, for those who need more, or better, rest, or who are inclined to still their minds for a few minutes a day, some good ones exist on all the major mobile platforms.
Simply Being ($1 on Apple, Android and BlackBerry) and Mindfulness Meditation ($2 on Apple, with an Android version in the works) are among the better ones, while Universal Breathing - Pranayama Free (free on Apple) and Pranayama Free (on Android) are useful for those who want to test the waters.
Those with pressing insomnia issues should consider Pzizz Sleep ($6 on Apple, with a Lite version for $2). On Android, the app costs $5.69 and goes by the name Pzizz, the Insomnia Solution. Another good, but pricey, option, is Mayo Clinic Insomnia Wellness Solutions ($25 on Apple). The meditation apps, though, may well be enough to get you to sleep — or at least help calm you down.
Pranayama Free is the simplest. It leads you through exercises meant to limit you to seven breaths per minute, five breaths per minute, or about four breaths per minute. When I tried it, the graphics were helpful, but the music was a tad obtrusive.
A bigger problem was that it was slow to load and not very responsive to the touch (at least on my Droid2), so it was barely more relaxing than frustrating.
I tried Simply Being not long after in the middle of a workday that had gone haywire. I was surrounded by e-mail-toting gadgets that, I was sure, were loading important messages from colleagues.
I grabbed my iPhone and opened Simply Being, and the screen offered four options for “guided meditation for relaxation and presence.” I chose the 5-minute option, and left the 10-, 15- and 20-minute options for another day.
I then chose music, rather than nature sounds, to accompany the narrative, and I tweaked the volume of each so the narrative was clearly audible.
I was braced for a narrator who had the sort of whispery, saccharine tone that’s as relaxing as a Sawzall on a steel pipe, but fortunately, the narrator, Mary Maddux, used an approach that didn’t sound like a parent cooing a baby to sleep.
Ms. Maddux’s husband and co-developer of the app, Richard Maddux, composed the admirable soundtrack.
After five minutes I was nearly asleep.
Not everyone will respond to a given narrator’s voice, so another good choice is Mindfulness Meditation, which is written and narrated by Stephan Bodian, the author of “Meditation for Dummies.”
Mr. Bodian’s narrative was thorough, relaxing and well pitched for a meditation novice like me. There is no music or sound accompaniment, but there is more content to the app than in Simply Being.
Users can choose meditations of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 minutes, or a simpler relaxation narrative of 10 minutes.
A guide also offers audio tips for finding the best meditation position, for instance, and there is a text-based checklist of eight factors to improve the experience.
About an hour after nearly falling asleep to Ms. Maddux’s voice, I did the same with Mr. Bodian’s voice.
That drowsiness was partly due to a bout of insomnia the previous night. Lying awake at 3 a.m., I tried Brain Wave ($2 on Apple), which features binaural electronic tones against the backdrop of nature sounds. According to the app’s description, it requires earbuds or earphones to work properly.
Brain Wave, which has attracted good ratings from iTunes users, also has programs for easing anxiety, improving mental focus and the like, but I chose the option “Deep Sleep.” It wasn’t very practical because I couldn’t lay my head to either side or the earbuds would jam into my ear.
Either because of that, or because the binaural sounds simply didn’t work for me, I felt no closer to sleep after 45 minutes. I turned off the program, pulled out the earbuds and later managed to get to sleep.
Another option is Pzizz Sleep, which uses binaural sounds, spoken words and music in new combinations each time the user opens the app. It’s a smart choice for those who tend to grow weary of repeated narrations on other apps.
The Mayo clinic app is generally good, as well. Given how much money insomniacs spend on other treatment options, it is arguably worth the $25 investment.
That’s especially true for iPad users. The app is split between a multipage stress assessment and roughly 90 minutes of videos, and the videos, especially, render nicely on the iPad’s screen. (Free tip: It’s a myth that exercising before bedtime will help you fall asleep more easily.)
For the price, though, users should be able to expect an experience that is devoid of fluff. Although many of the video tutorials are useful, including an in-depth discussion of insomnia by Mayo Clinic specialists, far too much video is devoted to a promotion of the app’s developer and the Mayo Clinic.
It’s anyone’s guess, for instance, why insomniacs would need to watch a testimonial from a mother whose son was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at the Mayo Clinic.
It’s enough to make you mad — that is, if you weren’t already in full command of your emotions.

WakeMed launches smartphone app that locates ERs, finds doctors

Searching for the nearest ER? There’s an app for that — if you want to find an emergency room in North Carolina’s Research Triangle, that is. WakeMed Health & Hospitals in Raleigh has launched a hospital smartphone application whose features include an emergency department locator that offers turn-by-turn GPS directions automatically generated from the phone’s location. But it will only take users to the nearest WakeMed emergency facility.
WakeMed is one of a growing number of hospitals that are adding smartphone apps as another way to connect with patients. OhioHealth of Columbus, Ohio earlier this year released a smartphone app for expectant mothers that provides text, images and videos about their pregnancies. The app also provides features such as appointment reminders and screening test explanations. The Mayo Clinic last year started a healthcare mobile apps company called mRemedy.
Debbie Laughery, WakeMed’s vice president of public relations, said that the hospital looked to see what other hospitals had done with smartphone apps and found that so far, few have them. She said some children’s hospitals have apps intended to provide information to parents about typical child ailments. Laughery said WakeMed opted not to replicate that because so much of that information is available from other sources.
WakeMed began work on the app last September. The reason it’s taken nearly a year to get the app out is because the hospital wanted to include a feature that provides updates on emergency department wait times, Laughery said. That feature is still not yet ready.
Other hospital app features currently available include a doctor finder and a place for patients to input health and insurance information. Laughery said that these inputs are helpful in case a patient is found incapacitated. The information on the app can provide responders with details about a patient’s medical allergies or health conditions. Besides providing directions and details for all WakeMed facilities, the app also offers campus maps for users to navigate once they arrive.
WakeMed’s app works on iPhone and Android devices. The free app is available at the Android Market, iTunes Store or at www.wakemed.org.

App for Google Android smartphones secretly records calls

A Nexus One smartphoneA mobile application for Google's Android smartphones can secretly record users' phone calls and transmit them to malicious hackers, security researchers have found.
Once downloaded by a user, the app – which the researcher has not named, but seems to have a name relating to "System Messages" – surreptitiously stores a recording of the user's incoming and outgoing calls to the phone's memory card, according to the New York-based security experts CA Technologies.
In a blog post unveiling the finding, researcher Dinesh Venkatesan said the so-called "Trojan app" is one of the most invasive they have ever uncovered. He also warned that there is an increasing trend targeting smartphones using Google's Android software, which allows developers to submit apps with little vetting.
Google had not returned requests for comment at the time of publication.
Venkateskan wrote on the researcher's official blog: "In one of our earlier blogs, we have demonstrated how a Trojan logs all the details of incoming/outgoing calls and call duration in a text file.
"This Trojan is more advanced as it records the conversation itself in 'amr' format [which is optimised for recording speech]. Also it has many other malicious activities that we have seen in many of the earlier malware incidents targeted for Android platform."
The app, which was not named by the researchers for security reasons, asks users' permission to intercept outgoing calls and record audio before it is installed. Once downloaded, all calls the user makes will be logged on the phone's memory – which can potentially be accessed by the app's makers. The sound is filed in a folder called shangzhou/callrecord, suggesting that its author is Chinese.
Venkatesan added: "As it is already widely acknowledged that this year is the year of mobile malware, we advise smartphone users to be more logical and exercise the basic security principles while surfing and installing any applications."
Only last month security experts warned over a new strain of the Zeus virus – known to be one of the most pernicious on the internet and which targets login details for banks – that specifically targeted Android smartphones.
Almost 52m Android smartphones were shipped worldwide in the second quarter of this year – almost a fivefold increase year-on-year – according to market researchers Canalys. The huge increase is attributed to the large number of manufacturers, including HTC, Samsung and Motorola, now making handsets using Google's software.
